Laura Cooksey: My son attended St MarkâÂÂs during his kinder year and was fortunate to have a very caring teacher. However, when he began first grade, things changed dramatically. Within a few weeks into the school year, we noticed that he was deeply frustrated with school in general. He cried many times on our way home after school because he was getting bullied and picked on by kids at the school. During the first parent-teacher conference, his teacher informed us that he was behind in class. My son is a slow-learner, and during this time, we discovered that he is ADHD. His first grade teacher was incapable of helping him in any way. It was clear that it was up to us to help, he had a tutor and we started him on ADHD medication. However, there seemed to be a sense of urgency from his teacher for an immediate improvement and there was no time to see if the medication worked or not. So, we took him out of St. MarkâÂÂs, 10 weeks into the school year. It was a very trying time moving him to a new school, new day care, etc. But, it turned out to be the best thing that we could have done to help him out. He now attends Polk where he has an amazing teacher who has had a remarkable positive impact on him. He has gained back his confidence, his grades have improved, and best of all he is happy and looks forward to school! St MarkâÂÂs maybe a good school for some kids, but it is not the best school for all.
